In 2024 and 2025, there were 5 to 6 times where the nursing home called Mrs Bacon about Mr Butter’s health conditions. Having advanced dementia didn’t mean he would be immune to other common illnesses like pneumonia. It is common for older people to catch but it did no make it any less dangerous.
And with increase in Mr Butter’s needs, the nursing home then requested for an Advance Care Plan from Mrs Bacon.
What is an Advance Care Plan (ACP)? – Basically, it a document that drafts how one would like to be treated when death comes knocking. In Mr Butter’s case, Mrs Bacon, the Court Appointed Deputy (CAD) was able to sign this document for him. The ACP given by the nursing home asked if CPR and Emergency treatment would be needed if Mr Butter stopped breathing.
As a daughter, Mrs Bacon consulted with Mdm Wholemeal and she didn’t want Mr Butter to suffer more than he needed to. Mdm Wholemeal opted for no CPR or emergency treatment should Mr Butter stop breathing.
As a CAD, Mrs Bacon checked with the lawyers and realized this was not a legal document but one that made known the patient’s intention. She was allowed to sign it. (For those looking for a legal version of ACP, it is called the Advance Care Directive.)
So Mrs Bacon signed and submitted it to the nursing home. Little did she know that in less then 15 months, the document would be used.
